Orenco is a growing company in a
growing industry. The last census reported that about 25% of all households,
nationwide, use an onsite (decentralized) wastewater treatment system, and that
percentage has been steadily increasing.
Types

Orenco currently employs more than 200 people, who hold a wide variety of jobs:

We offer competitive wages and an
excellent benefits package, including 401(k), profit-sharing, medical, dental,
disability, and life insurance. We provide regular training opportunities for
our staff and consistently seek to hire from within.
Our culture is "open" and suggestions
are encouraged. In fact, we expect all employees to actively contribute to continuous
improvements in all our operations. Above all, we are committed to providing
a safe working environment and respectful treatment for all our employees and
guests.
Our employees value our casual atmosphere
and our quality of life. We're located 15 minutes north of Roseburg, Oregon,
a small town of 20,000, in the rolling hills of the beautiful Umpqua River Valley.
We're also one hour south of Eugene, a university town with PAC-10 sports, a
world-class performing arts center, and literally hundreds of restaurants.
Current Employment Needs
We occasionally have
openings for entry level and experienced engineers in our electrical and systems
engineering groups. Engineering disciplines include electrical, civil, mechanical,
and environmental.

Heilner Garners Kudos for Local
Employer's Group

Congratulations are in order for
Mary Heilner, Orenco's human resources manager. As a member of the Douglas County
Employer Council, Mary put together the application that resulted in the group's
being named the nation's outstanding local employer council in a small community.
The nomination for the national award
came after the Douglas County group was named Oregon's Employer Council of the
Year last fall.
The Douglas County Employer Council,
which meets monthly at the employment office, is made up of private-sector employers
who act as an advisory group to the Oregon Employment Department. Mary says
it's a dynamic group that really cares about the community. "Because we
have such a small base to draw from, we see the benefits of developing the work
force."
The Council sponsors seminars for
employee and employer development, hosts job fairs, works with the Veterans
Affairs Administration, funds scholarships, and helps to promote the Employment
Department's role as a work force service, not as an unemployment agency.
Fundraising Fun

Paula Ball draws raffle tickets.
We recently figured out how to put
some fun into fundraising. Orenco employees volunteered their special talents
as prizes for a March Madness Raffle for the American Red Cross. Fishermen in
our ranks offered a crabbing trip to the coast, a fly fishing lesson, and drift
boating on the Umpqua River. Creative chefs came up with catered dinners and
a "dessert of the month club." A talented artist donated an original
artwork.
A master gardener designed a daylong
"gardening extravaganza" that he promised to extend "if beer
is served." Our technology wonks agreed to make house calls for home computer
snafus. Others shared their passions with a mountain bike adventure, a learn-to-ski
trip, a river rafting trip and barbecue, and a round of golf at the country
club. Husband and wife orchardists volunteered a flat of Asian pears when they
ripen in September. Orenco even kicked in some paid time off.

Left: Three of our many raffle
ticket holders. Right: Jack Firkins, multiple ticket buyer and big winner.
The big drawing at the end of March
drew a lively crowd, apparently operating on a sugar high from the "brownie
boats" the HR department served up. Queries echoed across the room. "That
dessert-of-the-month club: Thats for life, right?" "Do I have
to have skis, pay for the lift ticket and provide my own transportation?"
(yes, no, and no) "Just how much beer DO I have to lay in for a gardener?"
Finally, tickets were drawn, prizes
were chosen, and now folks, some of whom knew each other only in passing, are
making plans to bike, fish, eat, garden, golf, ski, and pick pears together.
Our local Red Cross chapter may have been the big winner but camaraderie at
Orenco just got a huge boost as well.
