In advanced or secondary wastewater treatment, septic tank effluent is purified to a level suitable for subsurface discharge. Packed bed technology, in use for more than 100 years, is the gold standard for advanced treatment.
In packed-bed systems, effluent trickles through a moist, porous media. Microorganisms growing in the media remove impurities from the effluent. Compared with advanced treatment systems that use liquid or membranes, packed bed systems use less electricity, require less maintenance, and are much less prone to upsets from abuse.
For advanced treatment, Orenco's flagship product is the AdvanTex Treatment System. Using Orenco's textile filter technology, AdvanTex systems can reduce BOD, TSS, and Fecal Coliform by up to 98%. And they can reduce nitrogen by up to 70%. Residential and commercial models are available. Commercial-sized AdvanTex treatment systems are also used in effluent sewer systems that serve entire communities.
