MBBR Wastewater Treatment Systems

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Systems

Orenco's MBBR systems have been installed worldwide to meet stringent BOD/TSS, ammonia, and total nitrogen limits. They're energy-efficient, scalable, and adaptable to harsh climates, helping developers and operators achieve compliance while reducing operational costs. MBBR units integrate seamlessly with Orenco's AdvanTex® AX-Max™ systems for enhanced performance.

Because they're insulated and watertight, MBBR systems provide consistent year-round treatment with low odors and a low-profile design that blends into any site.

MBBRa Treatment Systems: Enhanced Secondary Treatment for High-Strength Waste

Orenco’s Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor - Aerating (MBBRa) is a prefabricated secondary treatment unit that significantly reduces BOD, TSS, TKN, and ammonia in high-strength or high-flow wastewater exceeding 25,000 gallons per day. It features an insulated, watertight vessel with fine-bubble aeration that delivers effluent that meets or exceeds BOD/TSS limits. Its modular design and accessibility make installation, operation, and maintenance simple and cost effective.

Applications

MBBRa systems are ideal for sites requiring advanced secondary treatment, including:

  • Municipal, commercial, and industrial wastewater facilities
  • High-strength waste pretreatment (e.g., food processing, dairies)
  • Nitrification for ammonia reduction
  • New installations, retrofits, or expansions in permanent or mobile locations
  • At-grade or above-grade setups in diverse climates
Key Features and Benefits
  • Insulated & Enclosed Vessel: Stable temperatures for year-round process control; energy efficiency with minimal seasonal adjustments; prevention of I&I, algae, and evaporation through watertight design
  • Modular, Scalable & Flexible: Large, varied vessel sizes for maximum efficiency, seamlessly integrating with AdvanTex media and existing systems
  • Energy-Efficient Aeration: Fine-bubble plate diffusers provide 3-4x oxygen transfer vs. coarse air systems, optimized for low energy consumption
  • Simplified Maintenance: Serviceable diffusers and aeration lines without system shutdown or bypass, no media removal required

MBBRd Treatment Systems: Advanced Denitrification for Stringent Nitrogen Limits

Orenco’s Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor - Denitrifying (MBBRd) delivers pre-anoxic and/or post-anoxic denitrification to achieve total nitrogen reductions up to 85%, meeting discharge limits as low as 10 mg/L TN. Compatible with AdvanTex® AX-Max™ and other secondary systems, the MBBRd uses pneumatic mixing to suspend biofilm carriers in an insulated vessel, enabling efficient nitrate removal (NO3-N) in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Its modular, accessible design simplifies installation, operation, and maintenance while supporting carbon dosing for optimal performance.

Applications

MBBRd systems excel in scenarios demanding nitrogen control, such as:

  • Pre- and post-anoxic denitrification
  • Permanent and mobile locations
  • Above-grade or at-grade installation
  • A wide range of climates
  • Existing systems requiring stringent nitrogen limits
Key Features and Benefits
  • Insulated & Enclosed Vessel: R-26 foam-core fiberglass for temperature stability, watertight integrity, minimal seasonal adjustment, and I&I prevention
  • Efficient Mixing System: Durable pneumatic mixers (5 CFM per bubble), corrosion-resistant agitation of biofilm carriers without high energy use
  • Simplified Maintenance: Mixers and media accessible via lids without system bypass, carbon feed integration for reliable denitrification
  • Modular & Flexible: 8ft x 8ft (height and width) standard vessels with optional 10ft/12ft widths, optional safety railings and control rooms for above-grade installations
  • Proven Performance: HDPE biofilm carriers and fiberglass construction for long-term reliability, with up to 85% nitrate reduction in varied configurations

“I’ve always liked the proactive approach that Orenco takes. I have two criteria regarding any product specifications: the product does the job and the company provides technical support. Orenco excels in both, which makes me look good and my clients happy.”
